Zone 4
Pure Diligence
We would like to invite you to explore Exhibition Zone 4, "Pure Diligence."
In this zone, “Pure Diligence,” visitors will encounter the “Phra Mahachao Sculpture” created by an artist who aims to convey the concept of “diligence” through the depiction of Phra Mahajanaka from the book Pra Mahajanaka written by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX). The story of Phra Mahajanaka, who endured great perseverance by swimming across the ocean for seven days and nights, even though he could not see the shore, symbolizes the idea that without perseverance, any task would yield no results, no matter how close or distant the goal might seem.
This reflects the relentless commitment and tireless efforts of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej in his work for the people, undeterred by fatigue and hardship. It also serves as an example for those in the medical profession and the public, encouraging them to follow in his footsteps. His Majesty used Phra Mahajanaka as a reminder, imparting wisdom and inspiration to the Thai people to use “wisdom” to guide their “diligence,” overcoming life’s challenges and obstacles for their own benefit and the benefit of the nation.
Atmosphere of Exhibition Zone 4
“…This book is dear to me. It is something I see as important and something I have created… I believe it will be beneficial to everyone, both Thai and foreign citizens.”
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX) wrote the book “Phra Mahajanaka”, based on the Mahajanaka Jataka, with great perseverance. He adapted the content and used language that made it easily understandable and relevant to the modern society. Furthermore, His Majesty graciously instructed Thai artists to illustrate the book, offering advice and making adjustments to the artwork and the book’s design until it was complete under his personal guidance.
The core message from this book emphasizes the importance of “diligence,” which consists of patience, determination, and the use of “wisdom” as a guiding tool. If everyone in the nation sets their minds to perseverance and strives to create and maintain goodness and progress, both individual and national prosperity and happiness will follow.
The book Phra Mahajanaka was inspired by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, following his listening to the Mahajanaka Jataka sermon by Somdet Phra Maha Wirawong (Win Dhammatharo), the abbot of Wat Ratchapathit, in 1977.
This Jataka tale reflects the virtue of perseverance (viriya parami) demonstrated by Phra Mahajanaka. In his conversation with the goddess Mani Mekhala, Phra Mahajanaka says, “One who strives with perseverance, even if they perish, is free of debt to family, deities, and parents. Moreover, a person who fulfills their duty with courage will not suffer regrets in the future.”
Although His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s version of Phra Mahajanaka differs from the original in the Tripitaka or the Chinnaworn version, his intent was to inspire his subjects with pure perseverance, sharp wisdom, and physical strength. Most importantly, he envisioned educational institutions such as “Bodhayalai” or “Pu Talay Mahavijjalaya” to advance public knowledge and critical thinking. He wished to encourage people not to exploit resources selfishly, as depicted in the story of Mithila’s citizens who damaged a mango tree by fighting over its fruits. Instead, he taught the importance of utilizing resources creatively, nurturing perseverance and virtue in people.
Through this royal literary work, His Majesty highlighted perseverance not for personal gain but for greater responsibility, weaving themes of conservation and sustainable development alongside the eradication of ignorance. This emphasis on education and knowledge aimed to promote both wisdom and ethics as the foundation for a life led by intelligence.
Similarly, King Bhumibol’s tireless dedication to alleviating the suffering of his people and enhancing their quality of life was evident throughout his reign. The countless royal development projects he initiated were not instant successes and often faced numerous challenges. Many of these projects took decades of research, experimentation, and problem-solving to reach fruition, reflecting the King’s enduring patience and commitment to sustainable progress for his people.
The royal address of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great was graciously given on October 27, 1973.
